The City of Charlottesville

approved a second vehicular crossing of the Downtown Mall this past April

and the trial will be continuing into May 2007.  When it was approved by a 4-1 vote (Kevin Lynch against), Mayor David Brown expressed interest in conducting origin and destination surveys on the vehicles to learn more about the traffic.  Today, workers for the City are conducting just such a survey at the new 4th Street crossing.

The data collected will be reviewed by City staff, the Planning Commission and City Council.  New City Councilors Julian Taliaferro and Dave Norris will also get the opportunity to weigh in next year.

During their campaigns

, Mr. Norris indicated he would have voted against the new crossing and Mr. Taliaferro indicated he would have supported the trial.
