Ongoing COVID-19 Coverage: UVa employee tests positive for coronavirus

The Thomas Jefferson Health District has confirmed that a Charlottesville resident in their late 50s has a case of COVID-19. The University of Virginia said late Monday morning that this person is an employee of the university.

“The individual who is ill, a staff member at the UVa Women’s Center who lives off Grounds, is receiving care and in quarantine at home following protocols from the Virginia Department of Health,” President Jim Ryan said.  “We wish her a speedy and full recovery.”

The case appears to be travel related, the health department said.

“The patient was tested for the novel coronavirus by a commercial lab,” the health department said.

Officials said they will will work to isolate the patient and contacts will be asked to stay home and away from other for 14 days.

“The positive test result is considered presumptive, pending confirmation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Health officials are following protocols to isolate this patient,” the university said in a statement.
