Cathy Smith Train

Immediate Past Chair

Cathy served as President of United Way-TJA for 30 years, retiring in late 2018. She was honored to work alongside talented volunteers and staff, and bring opportunity to many – most especially preschool children and their families.
In addition to serving as Board Chair of Charlottesville Tomorrow, she is on the St. Paul’s Church Ivy Vestry, Albemarle Police Foundation, BBT Advisory Board, and the Piedmont Y Early Learning Center Implementation Committee. Cathy was on the founding boards of the Charlottesville Free Clinic, Jefferson Area CHIP, and Women United in Philanthropy. She received the Paul Goodloe McIntire Citizenship Award, the John Snook Child Advocacy Award, and campaigned for and implemented the Charlottesville portion of the 1996 Olympic Torch Relay.
Cathy is a graduate of the UVA McIntire School of Commerce and she and her husband, Kirk, Train Architects, live in Albemarle County. They have two children, Kelley and Sam, one daughter-in-law, Francesca, and one grandson, William. Kelley is the founder and owner of Plainfields Media and resides in New York. Sam, USN CDR, is the Executive Officer of the USS Gettysburg, and Francesca works in cybersecurity.
