The county’s Board of Supervisors voted to remove the statue Aug. 6. They are the first Virginia municipality to use a new state law — which gives localities the right to remove their Confederate monuments — to take their’s down.
The county gave the statue — formerly known as “At Ready” — two cannons and cannon balls to the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation. They will be repurposed for displays at the Third Winchester Battlefield.
