UVA to Dedicate New Solar Panels
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 17, 2017 — The University of Virginia is expanding its on-Grounds solar power capacity, this time adding panels atop Clemons Library.
Since the mid-February, 324 solar panels, totaling about 7,530 square feet, on the roof of Clemons Library have been producing what will amount to about 199,529 kilowatt hours per year. This accounts for about 15 percent of Clemons’ annual electric draw.
Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe will speak at the ribbon-cutting to officially inaugurate the array of solar panels. Among the other speakers at the event will be Pat Hogan, UVA’s executive vice president and chief operating officer; Angela Navarro, Virginia’s deputy secretary of natural resources; Taylor Brown, co-founder of Sun Tribe Solar, which installed the panels; and Suchita Chharia, a UVA global environments and sustainability student.
The University worked with Charlottesville-based companies Sun Tribe Solar and Martin Horn Inc. contractors on the Clemons Library project.
