VDOT crews repair sinkhole on Route 29
A crew with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has filled a sinkhole that opened up in the early morning of June 18, 2007 outside of the Seminole Commons shopping center in Albemarle County near Hollymead Town Center.
This is the third time in less than two years
that the pavement in that stretch of Route 29 has failed due to an underlying problem with a broken stormwater pipe.
Charlottesville Tomorrow
was on the scene this afternoon while workers filled a “void space” underneath the roadway and sent a camera through the pipe to try and pinpoint the source of the problem. Steel plates were later placed over the patch to allow traffic to use the southbound lane during tomorrow morning’s rush hour. VDOT will continue their work investigating the failure and plans to expedite the permanent replacement of the stormwater pipe.
