For nearly four decades there has been talk about building a U.S. 29 bypass around Charlottesville as part of ongoing improvements to the highway from the North Carolina line to Interstate 66, west of Washington D.C.

Danville built a bypass around the city, as did Lynchburg and Culpepper; the last large population center that needs to improve road conditions along the route is Charlottesville, according to Laurie Moran, president of the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce.

In 2009, the Virginia Department of Transportation made a presentation called the Route 29 Corridor Study, which it created with input from the Parsons Transportation Group. At that time, and during citizen input meetings, Moran
