Describe your nonprofit’s mission.
Since 1983, the teachers at North Branch School have provided an activities-based learning environment for children ages 3-14. Our mission statement calls for the school to foster nonviolence, environmental stewardship, and the involvement of students in the community. We are dedicated to providing a diverse environment which stimulates curiosity and creativity. North Branch School is a place where children learn to think for themselves and to work successfully both as individuals and as members of a team. Throughout, there is an emphasis on personal achievement and cooperation.
What need in our community brought about the creation of your nonprofit?
Parents and teachers began North Branch School in 1983 so that students could experience an in-depth, activities-based curriculum, with many hands-on experiences, a strong environmental program, lots of outdoor time for children, and a commitment to working together to create an intentional learning environment.
How has your nonprofit made a difference in our community?
The staff and students of North Branch School volunteer within the community – monthly at the local food pantry, stream monitoring, growing food in the school’s gardens to share with others. In addition, the small class size and “stretch-without-stress” learning environment has helped many students reach their academic potential while maintaining a love of learning. Five valedictorians and four salutatorians at Nelson County High School were former North Branch School students.
How can community members help you achieve your mission?
The teachers are always looking for meaningful field trip experiences, volunteers to share their expertise with students, community members to serve on the North Branch Advisory Council, and individuals and corporations to support our major fundraising events.
Tell us a story that has come out of your work.
A student began at North Branch School as a five-year-old hesitant about and wary of being outdoors. One day when she arrived late after an appointment, her class was taking a nature walk in the woods. Her mother was concerned that the transition would be difficult. Instead her daughter exclaimed “Oh boy, it’s nature time” and raced to join her group.
