Polls have officially closed at 7 p.m. in central Virginia.

When will the elections be called? That depends on the race.

Charlottesville Tomorrow’s 2024 Voter Guide is tracking important local results in central Virginia. We’ve also partnered with the Associated Press to show you real-time updates for the President and Vice President, Virginia’s U.S. Senate and House of Representatives races in the 5th and 7th districts.

Officials will likely know the result for many of the 23 local elections happening in central Virginia later tonight, several county registrars told Charlottesville Tomorrow.

With just 160 voters, the Town of Madison, for example, will probably know who will fill the roles of mayor and town council within a couple hours of polls closing, said Madison County Registrar Lauren Eanes. Likewise, Albemarle County’s Rio District will also probably find out who will join the School Board before morning, said Assistant Registrar Brooklyn Eubanks.

The federal races could take longer — perhaps days longer.

For the U.S. House of Representative and Senate races, how long will largely depend on how close the races are, and how many provisional ballots were cast. Provisional ballots are what voters who registered today use to vote. These special ballots have to be verified by election officials before they are counted. This takes between seven to 10 days, said Eanes.

“We’re seeing big numbers of those across the state,” Eanes said.

Provisional ballots are one of many things that could delay results from the presidential election. Here’s a report from the Associated Press about what goes into collecting election results — and why it could take a while.
