PIEDMONT COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS CELEBRATES WITH 19th ANNUAL RISING STAR AWARDS 23 OUTSTANDING YOUTHS

The nineteenth annual Arthur C. Greene Rising Star Awards will celebrate brilliant young artists from private and public high schools throughout Charlottesville and Albemarle County on Friday, October 2nd, 2015, starting at 5:30pm at CitySpace (100 5th Street NE) on the downtown mall. Everyone is invited to honor these young people’s outstanding achievements, and the evening will feature performances by a number of the participants.

“Rising Stars is one of the signature programs of Piedmont Council for the Arts,” said PCA Executive Director Gram Slaton. “There is no program like it anywhere else in central Virginia.

These high school seniors and a few juniors represent some of the most honored students in the Commonwealth, and many of them have participated in Governor’s School; professional musical, dance, or acting companies; or even broadcast television. Our kids are unlike any other, and it’s a privilege to be able to offer them this evening of celebration.”

Ninteen young artists are selected by teachers in their schools for the nominations, augmented by four nominees from arts organizations with a commitment to education. The 2015 honorees include, in alphabetical order by school:

The Arthur C. Greene Rising Star Awards are named after the much­beloved professor of drama from the University of Virginia and former PCA board member who devoted a large part of his life to encouraging the talents of young people.

Since 1979, Piedmont Council for the Arts has served as the designated arts agency for Charlottesville and Albemarle County. Piedmont Council for the Arts catalyzes collaboration among artists, arts organizations, and government entities to stimulate creative expression, promote cultural tourism, and advance the effective management and celebration of Central Virginia’s richly diverse cultural heritage.
