(ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Virginia) – Albemarle County Public Schools announced today that Craig Dommer, currently the principal of Yancey Elementary School, has been appointed as an assistant principal at Henley Middle School, and that LaTishia Wilson will be transferring from Henley to Greer Elementary School as its assistant principal. Both appointments will take effect on July 1.
Dommer will be moving from a school with an enrollment of 116 students to a school that enrolls over 800 students. He has served as Yancey’s principal since 2012. Under his leadership, the school has increased its emphasis on project-based learning and the expansion of community partnerships, both of which align well with Henley’s focus.
“I have had the opportunity to know and work with Craig for many years,” said Henley’s principal, Dr. Beth Costa, “both as a member of the instructional leadership team in the central office and as a colleague on the school division’s senior leadership team. He brings a deep base of knowledge and experience as an innovator to our school. His skills also will be important to the integration of our social and emotional development initiative into our curriculum,” she said.
Wilson currently is an interim assistant principal at Henley. At Greer, she will succeed Eileen Delaney, who is relocating to the west coast after the current school year.
“LaTishia began her career at Greer, working with the Extended Day Enrichment Program,” said Robyn Bolling, Greer’s principal. “Her husband is a Greer graduate, and their family is actively involved in the community. Community building and fostering relationships with our families is a large part of our mission. LaTishia will be warmly welcomed and I look forward to our partnership,” she added.
The school division said it will immediately begin the recruitment process for a new principal at Yancey and expects to have a successor to Dommer in place by July 1. As is the school division’s practice, the recruitment process will include input from representatives from the local Yancey community.
“Among the strengths of our school division is having so many outstanding young administrators who offer a fresh perspective and innovative ideas to our schools. Both Craig and LaTishia will be immediate contributors to the learning environments at Henley and Greer,” said Dr. Matt Haas, deputy superintendent of Albemarle County Public Schools.
Prior to being appointed as Yancey’s principal, Dommer was a lead instructional coach in Mathematics for all of the school division’s 26 schools. He also has taught reading and math. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Buffalo, and he received both his master’s degree and his Education Specialist degree from the University of Virginia (UVA).
Wilson also is a UVA graduate, where she received her Bachelor of Arts. She holds a master’s degree in Special Education from the University of Phoenix and an Education Specialist degree from Regents University. Prior to her appointment at Henley, she was an assistant principal at Stone-Robinson Elementary School and a consultant for priority status schools.
