The sixth annual ArtFest in the West celebration is being held this year on Friday, March 2, from 6 until 9 p.m. in Western Albemarle High School’s cafeteria.
The event showcases student talent from all six of the public schools in the western feeder pattern, while also raising funds to support arts programming in all six schools. This year’s theme, “Out of This World,” features student artists and their work in vocal and instrumental music, fine arts, photography, creative writing, and drama.
Among the highlights this year will be a ukulele concert by Meriwether Lewis Elementary School students; a preview of Western Albemarle High School’s spring musical, Legally Blonde; ceramics demonstrations; as well as performances by the Henley Middle School Jazz Band and Western Albemarle’s Jazz Band, Choir, and Orchestra. Families also will be able to participate in a wide range of activities, including ceramics, hands-on arts and crafts, and a photo booth.
The event is organized by Arts in Western Education (AWE), which last year raised nearly $13,000 to support students who attend Brownsville, Crozet, Meriwether Lewis, and Murray elementary schools; Henley Middle School; and Western Albemarle High School.
“This event is becoming more important and popular each year because of its focus on students and family. We appreciate the support of all of those who join us for this extraordinary evening each year and are contributing to the quality of arts programming for all students in the western part of our county,” said Jim Lambert, president of AWE’s Board of Directors.
In 2017, proceeds from ArtFest in the West made possible the purchase of supplies for music, ceramics, creative writing, digital imaging, and drama programs.
“There is no entrance fee,” Lambert added. “Families can expect stellar activities for kids, wonderful food and entertainment, and a silent auction. Attendees can bid on music lessons, original art, gift certificates to local spas and restaurants, and much more. All for a great cause,” he added.
ArtFest in the West is sponsored by the Fine Arts departments in the six western feeder pattern schools and by AWE, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Businesses interested in being a sponsor or in donating to the Silent Auction this year should contact Jennifer Aminuddin at 804-832-4493.
