The resignation of
William Daggett
, vice chairman of Albemarle County’s
Architecture Review Board
, has added one more item to the docket of board and commission nominations the county Board of Supervisors will take up in January at the first meeting of the year.
Daggett, who was first appointed to the ARB in 2007, said that an unexpected increase in the amount of travel required for his architecture job with Daggett + Grigg was responsible for his decision.
“It’s fair that they [the ARB] have folks who can be there,” said Daggett in an interview. “My business is taking me away.”
His travel schedule, which he predicted would continue, meant that Daggett had to miss a majority of meetings between late July and December, which he termed a “burden” to the rest of the five-member board in his resignation letter.
The county is currently accepting applications for a replacement to serve the duration of Daggett’s term, which ends in November 2012. Daggett’s seat, like all members of the ARB, is at-large, representing the entire county.
County staff said that the list of applicants would be made public Dec. 30 and that supervisors would make a selection at their first meeting of the new year, on Jan 4.
Because of recent elections for the Board of Supervisors in the White Hall, Rivanna and Scottsville districts, supervisors will also make appointments to several other bodies, including the Planning Commission and Albemarle County Service Authority.
The six supervisors make one appointment each to these commissions, whose members’ tenures coincide with the four-year terms of the supervisor who appointed them. The Planning Commission also has a seventh, at-large seat serving a two-year term, which is currently held by Duane Zobrist.
In January, newly elected
Christopher J. Dumler
will fill the seat long held by retiring Scottsville Supervisor Lindsay G. Dorrier Jr. As is customary when seats change hands, the county is seeking applicants for the Scottsville District representatives on both the Planning Commission and the Albemarle County Service Authority.
White Hall Supervisor Ann H. Mallek and Rivanna Supervisor Kenneth C. Boyd both won re-election this year and have not requested applications for their districts’ seats on the boards. The Planning Commission seats are currently held by
Tom Loach
(White Hall) and Calvin Morris (Rivanna), while Bill Kittrell represents White Hall and vice chairman Clarence Roberts fills the Rivanna post for the ACSA.
However, at Tuesday’s meeting of the Planning Commission, Loach announced that he would not seek another term, setting the stage for Mallek to advertise the position before the year’s end.
The decision of whether to advertise for applications for the at-large Planning Commission seat will be made by the board on Jan 4. If the supervisors decide to advertise an opening, an appointment would likely be made in February, said Ella Jordan, the board’s clerk.
