
The
Charlottesville City Council
took a first look at the
City Manager’s proposed budget
during a line-by-line reading at a work session held on March 6, 2008. Council will adopt a budget on April 15, following a series of public hearings.

During the hour and a half meeting, City Manager Gary O’Connell began the process of taking Councilors through each section to see if they had any questions about his proposals. Sections reviewed included revenue assumptions, City staffing, as well as a description of any changes that have been made to the City’s tax and fee schedule. Each of these sections is available on the
City’s budget website
.
Councilors peppered O’Connell with questions ranging from fluctuations in utility tax collections to how various transfers are recorded in the budget.
A second work session on the Capital Improvement Program budget will be held on
March 13
, and on
March 18
the focus will be on outside agencies. A wrap-up work session will be held on
April 1
. The first public hearing on the budget is scheduled for
March 17
, followed by a second public hearing on
April 7
. Council will adopt the budget at a special meeting held on
April 15
.
