BGiA Partners with BGF for 2015 Autumn Build Day to Benefit Local Youth Organizations
U.Va. Darden’s Non-Profit Also Seeks Community Referrals for Spring Build Day Projects
Charlottesville, VA (October 5, 2015)—For the fourth year in a row, Building Goodness in April (BGiA), one of Albemarle County’s largest community projects, will support and execute an Autumn Build Day in partnership with Building Goodness Foundation (BGF). The focus of this year’s event will be renovating two local organizations serving youth: Barrett Early Learning Center and Camp Holiday Trails. This year’s Autumn Build Day will take place on Saturday, October 10, 2015 beginning at 8:00 a.m. and is made possible through a strengthened partnership between BGiA and BGF.
For Saturday’s Autumn Build Day, over 50 student volunteers from the University of Virginia’s Darden Graduate School of Business, together with the guidance and support of BGF’s staff and skilled volunteers, will spend the day repairing and improving Barrett Early Learning Center as well as Camp Holiday Trails. For more than 70 years, Barrett Early Learning Center has provided a safe and nurturing learning environment for children in the Charlottesville community and continues to ensure that they have opportunities for physical, emotional, social, and intellectual growth. Camp Holiday Trails is a 70-acre summer camp for children with disabilities or illness, ranging from Autism to HIV. The scope of the rehabilitation projects includes painting, repairing HVAC systems, landscaping, installing a treehouse roof, among other maintenance work. Additionally, thanks to a $24,000 donation from Hardie Planks, work will also include a large installation of new siding.
The Autumn Build is part of BGiA’s increased commitment and service to the Charlottesville/ Albemarle community and is an extension of the flagship Building Goodness in April Build Day in the spring. Each April, students and skilled professionals volunteer to renovate 8 to 12 buildings and homes in the Charlottesville/Albemarle community; the upcoming is year’s Spring Build will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2016. Since 1991, thousands of people have volunteered and hundreds of homes have been renovated with the generous support of local contractors. Students, local businesses, and individual donors provide funding, materials, and labor for all projects.
Building Goodness in April (BGiA) is a partnership between students of the UVA Darden Graduate School of Business and Building Goodness Foundation. From start to finish, BGiA is managed by Darden students who select projects, fundraise, and coordinate with suppliers, agencies and construction volunteers, giving students an opportunity to exercise their business skills in real life situations while providing an invaluable service to neighbors in need. BGiA is currently accepting referrals from the community for homes in need of repair for the April Build Day. Referrals can be sent to BGiAreferrals@gmail.com.
Building Goodness Foundation (BGF) is a Charlottesville-based nonprofit that connects skilled volunteers from the design and construction industries with vulnerable communities in Central Virginia, Colorado, Central America, the Caribbean, and West Africa. BGF volunteers build critically needed schools, health clinics, homes, and centers for ecological and economic development. BGF provides BGiA with connections to professional construction expertise, skilled labor for Build Day, and insurance. For more details, visit www.buildinggoodness.org.
