With less than four months until Election Day, Albemarle County supervisor candidates are filing their first major reports on campaign fundraising.
Republican Kenneth C. Boyd , running for a third term in the Rivanna District seat, holds the most cash on hand among all supervisor candidates. Boyd raised over $7,000 between April and June of this year. Boyd also had $11,526 on hand from the previous election cycle in 2009, for a total of $18,829.9. Boyd’s largest contribution from this past filing period was a $2,000 donation from James Morris.
Candidates were required to report all financial activity between April and June to the Virginia State Board of Elections. Finance reports are published online by the Virginia Public Access Project .
Boyd’s challenger, retired IBM executive Cynthia Neff , raised $16,359.18 last quarter. Though Boyd continues to lead in the amount of total cash on hand, Neff raised the most of any supervisor candidate this past filing period. Neff received a major contribution of $10,000 from Sonjia Smith, a prominent Democratic donor in the area. According to VPAP, Smith previously supported Neff’s unsuccessful 2009 campaign for the House of Delegates with cash and in-kind contributions totaling $79,046.
In the Scottsville District, attorney Christopher Dumler raised just over $10,000. Dumler, a Democrat, received contributions from 86 donors, the highest number of gifts among all supervisor candidates.
Republican James Norwood , a retired resident also running for the Scottsville seat, received a single donation of $1,000. This is the first time that both Norwood and Dumler have run for office, and therefore neither began their campaigns with any cash on hand.
The Scottsville seat is currently held by Lindsay G. Dorrier Jr. , a Democrat who is retiring this year after 30 years in public office.
In the White Hall District, Democrat Ann H. Mallek is running uncontested. Mallek raised over $6,000 this past quarter, with an additional $3,305 on hand from the previous election cycle.
Most of the donations from this past filing period came from individual donors, rather than businesses or corporations. The next reporting deadline is Aug. 15. The general election will be held Nov. 8.
Supervisors Duane E. Snow , of Samuel Miller, and Rodney Thomas , of Rio, are not up for reelection this year.
