On February 28, 2006, the Albemarle County Planning Commission held a public hearing to consider a rezoning request for the Cascadia development. The rezoning request impacts 61 acres in a designated growth area on Route 20 North across from Darden Towe Park. The development would allow for up to 330 housing units adjacent to the Fontana Subdivision.
The Planning Commission faced a standing room only crowd and heard from over 25 speakers, most residents of the Fontana neighborhood who were primarily expressing opposition to road interconnections between Fontana and Cascadia citing the inadequacy of the existing roads in the Fontana neighborhood.
The Planning Commission voted unanimously (Higgins-White Hall absent) to defer the rezoning request and have staff schedule a follow-up worksession to allow for further review of the rezoning request.
