CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SELECTS MARCUS MARTIN, DIVERSITY & EQUITY LEADER, TO RECEIVE 2015 CHAMBER PAUL GOODLOE MCINTIRE CITIZENSHIP AWARD AT 102ND ANNUAL CHAMBER DINNER

(Charlottesville, Virginia – October 13) The Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce has selected Dr. Marcus L. Martin, of Charlottesville, Vice President & Chief Officer for Diversity & Equity for the University of Virginia, to receive the prestigious Chamber Paul Goodloe McIntire Citizenship Award. Dr. Martin will be presented the Award at the 102nd Annual Chamber of Commerce Dinner to be held at the Omni Hotel Thursday, November 12th.

The 102nd Annual Chamber Dinner is underwritten by CenturyLink, Hantzmon Wiebel, LLC and State Farm Insurance Companies. The Keynote Address, featuring Brian O’Connor, Head Baseball Coach of the Virginia Cavaliers, is underwritten by CFA Institute.

“Dr, Marcus Martin is a dynamic, recognized leader for equality,” stated Chad Zakaib, Vice President of Operations, Legacy Hospice, who serves as 2015 Chairman of the Chamber Board of Directors. “Dr. Martin is a stellar citizen of our community and our Chamber is honored to recognize him.”

Dr. Marcus L. Martin is Professor and past chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Virginia. He also served as Assistant Dean, UVa School of Medicine and he is currently Vice President & Chief Officer for Diversity & Equity at UVa. A native of Covington, Virginia, Dr. Martin earned his bachelor’s degrees in pulp and paper technology and chemical engineering from North Caroline State University. A member of the charter class of Eastern Virginia Medical School and the first African American graduate, he earned his medical degree in 1976.

In service to the University and community, Dr. Martin serves on numerous committees and boards including Hospice of the Piedmont, Jefferson School Foundation, Jefferson Scholars Foundation, and Blue  Ridge PACE. He also served as the founding Vice President of the 100 Black Men of Central Virginia organization whose goal is to close the achievement gap for African American males. Dr. Martin is the principal investigator for the NSF grant-funded Virginia-North Carolina Alliance. He leads an Alliance of nine Virginia and North Carolina institutions whose goal is to increase the number of underrepresented minority students receiving science, technology and engineering and math  degrees.

In addition to the 2015 Chamber McIntire Award, Dr. Martin is the recipient of the Serpentine Society 2012 “Ally of the Year Award,” the Charlottesville Tom Tom Festival 2014 Founders Award, and the 2014 John
E. Baker Legacy Award. He was the recent honoree on September 21 during the Men’s Day “Steps of a Good Man” recognition service at Zion Union Baptist Church Charlottesville. He is also a recipient of the 2015 UVa Lifetime Alumni and Parent Engagement “Faculty Above and Beyond”  Award.

Dr. Martin and his wife, Donna, have four adult children (three of whom are UVa graduates) and five grandchildren.

The Chamber of Commerce established its prestigious Paul Goodloe McIntire Citizenship Award in 1975 to recognize outstanding citizen contributions to the greater Charlottesville area. The Chamber award is named in honor of Paul Goodloe McIntire, whose good will set a standard of service that others through the years have reached for while helping to weave a fabric of selflessness that continues to provide for our community and its citizens.  A list of previous recipients is attached.
