Charlottesville City Schools Announces New Appointments

Charlottesville City Schools announced two new administrative appointments today. Jim Kyner, principal at Greenbrier Elementary, will become coordinator of high school testing and preschool programs. Longtime CCS administrator Kenneth Leatherwood will serve as interim principal at Greenbrier during the 2015-16 school year.

Kyner has served as principal at Greenbrier Elementary for seven years.  He received his undergraduate degree in elementary education from Ohio Wesleyan University and his master’s in administration and supervision at the University of Virginia.  Previously, he taught fourth grade at Greenbrier for 10 years, and he has also taught and served as an assistant principal in other divisions.

Leatherwood has served in a number of capacities at Charlottesville City Schools in a decades-long tenure.  His past roles include principal of Charlottesville High School, director of human resources, and interim principal at Venable Elementary.  Leatherwood has an undergraduate degree in history from Milligan College and earned his master’s of educational administration at East Tennessee State University.

Dr. Rosa Atkins commented, “We are pleased that Mr. Kyner will offer leadership for two important programs in our division, and we are equally pleased to have someone so experienced and talented as Mr. Leatherwood to step in for a year at Greenbrier.”

Mr. Kyner explained a letter to parents, “While I will miss being directly connected with the Greenbrier community, I am excited about this new opportunity to serve Charlottesville City Schools and its youngest students..”

In the same letter, Mr. Leatherwood wrote, “I believe that my long and varied experience with our division will be a good foundation for success for all of us – parents, staff, and especially students – in the year to come at Greenbrier.”

Kyner and Leatherwood will work together this summer to assure a smooth transition.
