How can central Virginia meet the challenge of keeping its diverse communities informed?
This is the central question Charlottesville Tomorrow CEO and Editor-in-Chief Angilee Shah will tackle as a 2024 Fellow in the Media Transformation Challenge, a Poynter Institute executive program designed to propel new ideas in the journalism industry.
The 2024 Fellows represent some of the biggest media brands in the world, including Yahoo! News, The Associated Press, ABC and Telemundo, as well as cutting-edge nonprofit news organizations, such as Charlottesville Tomorrow, Outlier Media in Detroit, and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.
Since 2007, 375 senior media executives have grown and strengthened their news organizations, built lifelong career skills and relationships, and made major contributions to industry transformation through this yearlong program.
“We’re grateful for a diverse, creative incoming class, whose challenges are very much part of the revitalization of the news ecosystem. It’s an exciting time in the journalism world, and our Fellows are at the heart of it,” said Media Transformation Challenge Executive Director Charlie Baum.
With years of collapse in the local news industry, Shah said that central Virginia has an amazing opportunity to build a way forward to help people stay informed.
“In order to help the diverse communities of central Virginia be empowered by being well informed, we’ll need a shared vision for what we want our news and information ecosystem to look like,” said Shah. “I’m grateful for this opportunity to help our communities become stronger by building a news organization that will serve them well.”
