Why do sustainable newsrooms matter?

This is the question Charlottesville Tomorrow’s editor-in-chief Angilee Shah will answer as a keynote speaker for a national news leadership conference at the end of October. Executive director Giles Morris will also present on how to build news organizations that diverse communities can trust.

Hundreds of news executives, entrepreneurs and journalists will gather for the three-day 2022 Independent News Sustainability Summit in Austin, Texas at the end of October.

Independent news organizations have a fantastic and uncommon opportunity to redefine how journalism works, without being weighed down by how things have always been done. Shah will give the final keynote address with Sisi Wei, editor-in-chief of The Markup. She will talk about how Charlottesville Tomorrow is reimagining local news in central Virginia, and how leaders can design journalism organizations to take care of people, and ultimately, remake the news. By not assuming value in any existing processes, these two leaders are creating impactful journalism by running newsrooms in which journalists can thrive.

The recording of the keynote address will be available to the public later in November.

Morris will present on building trust in divided communities with news leaders from Canada, California and Ohio. The session will focus on the relationship between trust, impact and organizational sustainability in communities that are reckoning with history and injustices, as well as sharp political divides.

The opening keynote speaker at the summit is Dean Baquet, is the former executive editor of The New York Times.

Hosted by LION (Local Independent Online News) Publishers, News Revenue Hub and RevLab at The Texas Tribune, there will be about 40 sessions focused on meeting challenges in the news ecosystem, finding financial stability and making an impact for communities that need information.

Sponsors for the 2022 Independent News Sustainability Summit include the Knight Foundation, The Lenfest Institute and Google News Initiative.
