Early voting for 2025 primary elections is underway in Virginia.

Registered voters may cast their ballots in person at local registrar’s offices between now and June 14, should they wish to vote before Primary Election Day, which is June 17.

Primary elections allow political parties to select nominees for open positions. Many races do not have primaries, especially for rural positions. However, if there is a primary election, Virginia law allows anyone to vote in it — regardless of the voter’s registered party. But each voter can only vote in one party’s primary.

There are five primary contests for voters in central Virginia this spring.

Every voter in the state can weigh in on the Democratic primaries for lieutenant governor, which has six candidates, and attorney general, which has two. The Virginian-Pilot has information about the lieutenant governor candidates’ backgrounds and positions here, and attorney general candidates here.

The Republican Party will hold a primary for the state’s 62nd District for the House of Delegates, which includes the counties of Orange, Greene, Madison and Culpepper. Karen Hamilton will face off against Clay Jackson.

Democrats are holding a primary for Albemarle County Board of Supervisors’ Jack Jouett District. Read Charlottesville Tomorrow’s Q&A with candidates Sally Duncan and C. David Shreve here.

The Democratic Party is also hosting a primary election for two at-large positions on the Charlottesville City Council. There are three candidates for the two positions. The two winners of the primary will go on to run for the two open positions in the fall general election. (This will be Charlottesville’s first time using rank-choice voting.)
