On Tuesday, the Google News Initiative announced first round recipients of its Journalism Emergency Relief Fund (JERF).  Charlottesville Tomorrow’s news team was awarded $5,000.

In April, Google announced the initiative as a way to support small and medium-sized news organizations producing original journalism for local communities in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 12,000 applications from more than 100 eligible countries were submitted.

“The response to this program has been truly overwhelming,” wrote the Google News Initiative Team. “It has been humbling and gratifying to help support local news organizations like you.”
