Gabrielle Schoppa, French & Technology Teacher, Burley Middle School

What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
Motivating students is challenging. It’s very rewarding when students find their point of interest and take off!

What’s the most common misconception about your job?
Teachers have many roles at their school in addition to teaching in their content area(s). Administrative responsibilities, teaching teachers, coaching, mentoring, and being students are a few other roles. Content areas taught often number more than one.

Where do you see the teaching field in five years?
Student performance and achievement may be evaluated more on cumulative knowledge shown by hands-on projects created across the curriculum. Students will apply what they are learning to more than one class.

What outside experience prepared you best to become a teacher?
I grew up on a small farm in a very large family. We made everything! It was hard work, but it taught me to be creative, to collaborate, and to learn by doing and making. When something didn’t turn out as expected, you kept working at it until it did!
