What need in our community brought about the creation of your nonprofit?
The need for compassionate, comprehensive end-of-life and grief support services, available to all — wherever they are and regardless of financial circumstances.
How has your nonprofit made a difference in our community?
We’ve provided care to thousands of our community’s most vulnerable members facing a terminal illness, including residential care at our Hospice House and Center for Acute Hospice Care, and at-home care or care in a nursing home, assisted living facility, or retirement community. We have also provided grief support to tens of thousands in our community who are grieving the loss of a family member of loved one, and these services are provided at no cost.
How can community members help you achieve your mission?
Community members can help us achieve our mission by calling on Hospice of the Piedmont when a family member or loved one is facing a terminal diagnosis and no longer wishes to pursue curative treatment and instead is seeking comfort care — symptom management and pain relief. Community members who are experiencing a loss or are grieving a past loss are also invited to call on Hospice of the Piedmont so that we may provide expert, compassionate grief support through classes, expressive therapies (like music and art), workshops, and events.
Tell us a story that has come out of your work.
A young girl who lived in the city of Charlottesville was killed in a tragic accident several years ago. After her death, the faculty and staff at the elementary school she attended needed help with the grief they and their other students were facing. They called Hospice of the Piedmont, and our art therapists immediately made plans to visit the school to meet individually with students and staff, using expressive art therapy to help the children process their grief, and individual counseling to help the adults cope with the loss. Despite the fact that the young girl who passed away had not received care from Hospice of the Piedmont, we responded in the face of this tragedy with our expert services, provided at no cost to any of the participants at the school.
