Dr. Ivan Login at Hollymead Elementary School

Ivan S. Login, M.D. – Albemarle County

Tell us about your volunteer activities.
As part of my phased retirement goals after 43 years as a Neurologist at the University, I was excited to work on reading with the children at Hollymead School.  My schedule allows for about 2 hours of classroom work each month where I collaborate with one student in second grade and one in kindergarten.  One of them is learning English as a second language.  I also entertain the idea that if there are some students potentially interested in a medical career at Albemarle High I might take advantage of my long career as a neurologist to teach them aspects of brain function and how we perform and interpret a neurological examination.  There are many fascinating aspects to that theme.

What inspires you to volunteer?
Our two daughters went through Hollymead in their education and I enjoyed doing homework with them.  Now I equally enjoy doing homework with our 3 granddaughters.  I thought that if I could help in some small way to encourage the young students here to find reading fun and exciting that would make a nice contribution and give me a good feeling as well.

If your volunteer work could make one long-lasting change, what would you want it to be?
I would like to feel that I helped these students with their reading skills along with many other contributors.  I know this is a team effort and I am making only a small contribution but it is a step in the right direction.

What is a little-known fact about you?
I have several hobbies that hold my interest including wood-working, a large fish pond in our yard and photography.  I have also learned to craft the Native American “dream catcher” that I have given to some special people in my life.

What brought you to Charlottesville/Albemarle County?
Our family moved here from Hershey, PA to begin my residency training in Neurology at the University of Virginia in 1973.  Except for 2 years of obligated service in the United States Navy,  as LCDR Neurologist at the Regional Naval Medical Hospital in Charleston, SC from 1976-1978, we have lived here ever since.
