Digital Inclusion Week is May 7-11, 2018 and the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library (JMRL) will host several events in order to move closer to the initiative’s goal: that all people have access to the internet and the tools they need to use it.

Digital inclusion refers to the activities necessary to ensure that all individuals and communities, including the most disadvantaged, have access to and use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). This includes five elements:

Digital inclusion must evolve as technology advances. Digital inclusion requires intentional strategies and investments to reduce and eliminate historical, institutional and structural barriers to access and use technology.

JMRL will host the following events as part of Digital Inclusion Week:

Tuesday, May 8 at 2-4 p.m.
Wednesday, May 9 at 5-7 p.m.
Thursday, May 10 at 3-5 p.m.
Friday, May 11 at 11a.m. -1 p.m.

Come see how a 3D printer operates, learn how to use wifi hotspots, learn about the library’s scanning and digitization services, learn how to download free ebooks and audiobooks, learn which database resources you can access through the library, and find out which other devices the library has available to use or check out.

Digital Branding: Crafting Your Presence Online

Join Charlottesville artist, designer, and tech consultant John LeMasney in a discussion on crafting an online presence. Chances are you already have a digital presence on Facebook, WordPress, Instagram or 100 other places. What does it say about you? Does it represent you well? Discover methods for developing an online presence, as opposed to just letting it define you without your editorial or creative consent. Courageous attendees can participate in an optional in-session review of their social media account or website! Ages 14+. Registration is required.

Apple Basics Tech Workshop

Looking for help with your iPhone or iPad? Join Clay Sisk, technology volunteer at the Senior Center, as he conducts a beginner’s workshop that covers the basics for getting the most out of your Apple products.

3D Printing 101

Northside Library, Tuesday, May 8 at 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Curious about the library’s 3D printer, but aren’t sure where to begin? Join library staff as they demonstrate how to create an object using TinkerCAD or select an object using Thingiverse and then print it using the library’s 3D printer. Be sure to bring your questions!
