Phil Seay, Aquatics Manager, City of Charlottesville

Your job title is Aquatics Manager. What, in your own words, would you say you do?
I manage the entire Aquatics Division (4 pools) and the Smith Fitness Center from a macro perspective. Patron and employee safety is first and foremost. I ensure adequate infrastructure, equipment, maintenance and staffing to provide safe and positive customer experiences.

What is the best part of your job? The most difficult part?
The best part of my job is continuing to work in the health and recreation field.

Nothing is really difficult, maybe challenging at times.

How does your job most directly impact the average person?
Our Aquatic and Fitness Centers are part of services provided by City. Therefore the impact would be through taxes or user fees. It is my responsibility to ensure the appropriate application and use of this revenue.

What is the most interesting project or work experience that you’ve had while with the City?
I worked at Buford Middle School as a teacher/administrator for 8 years. I developed and directed The First Tee Chapter for 11 years. I have been with the Aquatics Division of since December 2013. Each of these endeavors have provided many positive experiences and outcomes both personally and professionally.
