Crews at the University of Virginia recently replaced pedestrian-activated “in-pavement crosswalk lighting markers” with signals called “rectangular rapidly flashing beacons.” The city plans to replace its in-pavement signals over time with the new beacons because the in-ground ones cost more to maintain and can be hard to see by all vehicles because of the area’s topography.
