As reported by C-VILLE Weekly, the City of Charlottesville has been granted federal authorization and $382,000 in funding to construct a seven-foot fence along a stretch of railroad tracks near the Corner.
Cutting over the railroad tracks is a common shortcut taken by UVa students, and the city cites safety concerns as the reason for the fence’s construction. Additionally, city officials say previous efforts have done little to keep people from walking across the tracks.
Some UVa students have expressed concerns about the solid metal fence that would completely block foot traffic across the tracks.
