CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – As part of Charlottesville’s Safe Routes to School Program, the City is making enhancements to three intersections in the Belmont neighborhood: Monticello Ave. and Rialto St., Monticello Ave. and 6th St., and Meridian St. and Belmont Ave. Improvements include curb extensions and more visibly painted crosswalks.

Work began July 1 and will proceed in phases: 1. Monticello/Rialto; 2. Meridian/Belmont; 3. Monticello/6th. Work should be complete by August 2016; no streets will be closed.

These improvements will help make the neighborhood streets safer for children and adults by shortening crossing distances and helping those walking, biking and driving be more visible to one another. This work will also bring the intersections into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

This project is funded by a grant from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). It is the result of years of community engagement and input. More information, diagrams and updates can be found at www.charlottesville.org/monticello.
