CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (March 9, 2016) – The Charlottesville Albemarle Convention & Visitors Bureau (CACVB) is excited to announce its participation in the Virginia Festival of the Book as part of CACVB’s free Saturday programs to feature local artists and authors, Emily Gary and Tom Proutt. This program will be held at the Albemarle Tourism and Adventure Center, located in downtown Crozet at the historic train depot.
On Saturday, March 19th starting at 12:00 p.m., Emily Gary and Tom Proutt (A Celebration of the Seasons: Goodnight Songs) will present an interactive musical program for children with selections from both books in their “Goodnight Songs Series.” The series pairs musical compositions with previously unpublished work by Margaret Wise Brown.
In 2004, Proutt started working with Margaret Wise Brown’s publisher who introduced him to some of the unpublished poems of “Goodnight Moon”. That process has reached fruition with the release of “Goodnight Songs,” a cd of songs derived from those poems. Accompanying the cd is an imaginatively-illustrated book of the poems, all of which makes for quite a package. “Reading through the unpublished works is like opening up a time capsule,” Proutt says. “Many of the works were just a few lines but the sentiment was true enough to flood a three-minute piece, and ultimately broad enough to inspire the wonderful illustrations that grace each
individual song page. I’m just proud to be a part of such a great project. I love how the book and the cd fit together. ‘Goodnight Songs’ is just a beautiful work of art.”
“For us, this opportunity to participate with our friends at the Festival of the Book to have Emily and Tom be a part of our seasonal Saturday program series is wonderful,” said Kurt Burkhart, CACVB’s Executive Director. And, the Virginia Festival of the Book agrees. “We are very pleased to have our partners in tourism participating in our annual festival, and to offer this additional program in Crozet,” said Jane Kulow, Program Director for the Virginia Festival of the Book.
The goal of the CACVB’s series of programs is to engage visitors and locals alike, about topics related to activities and events that can be enjoyed in the western part of Albemarle County. The CACVB hopes locals will take advantage of these interesting and informative programs to learn more about our local tourism assets, hence becoming better-equipped to entice friends and family to come visit and enjoy our beautiful destination.
The CACVB staff at the Albemarle Tourism and Adventure Center is ready to educate visitors and locals about the array of tourism assets to be enjoyed in our area. This new Virginia certified visitor information center is located in the historic train depot in Downtown Crozet, which until recently was home to the town’s library. The space inside this beautiful building is shared with a consortium of local artisans, the Crozet Artisan Depot, LLC (Artisans), making it a must-see location for visitors. The Artisans are also planning to host events such as jam sessions (in partnership with The Front Porch) with local musicians at this location. The jam sessions will be from 7 – 9 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month.
