On Saturday, October 27th Renaissance School, in partnership for a second year with Jefferson Madison Regional Library, is hosting a workshop specifically for middle school parents as they prepare their students for success in high school, and ultimately, success in getting accepted to the college of their choice. The workshop, The Road to College: A Workshop for Parents, is open to all parents of students who may be new to the process of college counseling in high school.
“Choosing a secondary school is one of the most important decisions a family will make. Considerations such as academic programs, extracurricular activities, college counseling, and quality of faculty are all keys to making high school a success,” says Sara C. Johnson, Head of School and creator of The Road to College.
According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, only about a third of U.S. high school seniors are prepared for college-level coursework in math and reading. And while the performance of the country’s highest achievers is increasing in reading, the lowest-achieving students are performing worse than ever. Sara C. Johnson has developed one of the most successful college counseling programs in the area. Johnson’s unique approach to college counseling has earned her students an impressive $125,000 per student average in scholarships and grants. Additionally, Johnson was featured in U.S. News & World Report’s 2014 Best Colleges edition.
The Road to College is based on Johnson’s years of college counseling at Renaissance School and will help to prepare parents needs by covering:
• finding the right high school fit for your child
• transitioning from middle school to high school
• understanding the college counseling process and what to expect
• helping your child achieve success in high school with the greater goal of college success
The Road to College: A Workshop for Parents is free and open to the public. The event will be held from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon at JMRL-Crozet Library, 2020 Library Ave.
