Describe your nonprofit’s mission.
The Women’s Initiative provides vital mental health services for women regardless of ability to pay. Our mission is to provide women with effective counseling, social support and education so they can transform life challenges into positive change and growth.
What need in our community brought about the creation of your nonprofit?
Bebe Heiner founded The Women’s Initiative in 2007 in response to a profound need for mental health care for low-income women who were uninsured or underinsured and could not pay out of pocket for the services and support they needed.
How has your nonprofit made a difference in our community?
The Women’s Initiative is now the second largest provider of mental health treatment to low-income, uninsured women in our community. Here, women regain their ability to parent, work, and thrive.
How can community members help you achieve your mission?
Community members’ contributions are crucial to our work. We are fortunate to work with pro bono therapists who give their time and expertise to treat clients, enabling us to see many more women in need. Other volunteers also play a crucial role in administrative support, child care, and outreach. And we absolutely could not do this work without the financial support of community members who recognize the importance of access to mental health treatment for all women in our community.
Tell us a story that has come out of your work.
Access to mental health care saves lives. As one of our clients said, “You saved my life and therefore the lives of my children.”
