The University of Virginia has been dedicated to reducing its energy consumption since the early ‘90s. Now, the university is working with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Challenge to reduce campus energy intensity 20 percent in 10 years across over 15 million square feet of buildings.
Through its work with Better Buildings:
UVA has reduced energy consumption through extensive district energy improvements, a robust energy efficiency program for existing buildings, by installing solar panels generating 151 kW of electricity and by reducing the impact of new construction. UVA is in the process of investing an additional $3.1 billion in capital construction. As part of the new construction, the school is adding a wing to the University Hospital. This new addition will reclaim enough rainwater and air handler condensate to completely offset the water use within the addition.
