YMCA Announces Naming of Facility in McIntire Park; working toward November ground breaking
Piedmont Family YMCA announces The Brooks Family YMCA in McIntire Park
CHARLOTTESVILLE/ALBEMARLE– The Piedmont Family YMCA is excited to announce the naming rights for the new YMCA in McIntire Park. Thanks to the generosity of lead donors, Rob and Suzanne Brooks, “The Brooks Family YMCA” is that much closer breaking ground.
“This is a passion project for me as I have been involved with the Y since 1994. Rob and I are so excited to help make this happen and to help provide this gem to the Charlottesville/ Albemarle community,” says Suzanne Brooks.
The 77,000 square foot facility, to be located in McIntire Park West will include a 10-lane competition pool, warm water family recreation pool, large fitness floor, double basketball gymnasium with suspended walking track, group exercise studio, mind/body studio, cycle studio, child watch, family fun zone, teen center and community meeting space. Initial focus will be on community health, ensuring that everybody, regardless of ability to pay, has access to quality aquatics, recreation and family recreation.
“We have been working very hard these past six months to move this vital project forward. The community and specifically the Brooks family has stepped up in a significant way to make this possible” says Jessica Maslaney, Chief Operations Officer.
Along with this announcement comes the “Close the Gap” community support campaign. The Y has secured $17,745,000 towards an $18,745,000 total project, leaving a gap of $1,000,000 to be raised this Fall. The Perry Foundation has committed to a $500,000 grant, of which $200,000 is designated as community match by November 1 toward our $1,000,000 goal. And moving forward according to plans, the Y will be breaking ground this November with a grand opening of summer 2017.
The Y is also launching a social media campaign “Tell your Y Story!” Like our Facebook page by visiting www.piedmontymca.org and click the Facebook link. Tell your Y story and we will thank you with a project update along with a car magnet to show your support.
“So many people move here from communities with vibrant YMCAs and have stories of how the Y has touched their lives in meaningful ways. We want to capture those stories and support for our local Y” says Jessica.
