Aaron Fabio, City of Charlottesville

Your job title is Property Maintenance Inspector. What, in your own words, would you say you do? 

I proactively enforce the City Code as well as the Virginia Maintenance Code. The City Codes that I enforce are accumulation of trash, overgrowth of weeds, inoperable vehicles, and graffiti. The Virginia Maintenance Code relates to existing structures. There are times when a landlord is not properly maintaining the property and I will conduct an inspection and issue a notice of violation, which usually gets results. I view myself as a tenant advocate in that aspect. My position is a contract between the City of Charlottesville and the University of Virginia. The neighborhoods of the City that I enforce are the student Off-Grounds housing areas. I also conduct annual Fraternity and Sorority inspections to insure that the houses are up to code.

 

What is the best part of your job? The most difficult part? 

The best part of job is all of my wonderful coworkers here in Neighborhood Development Services; it’s like an extended family. I would say the most difficult part of the job is dealing with repeat offenders of code violations. 

 

How does your job most directly impact the average person? 

Enforcement of the Virginia Maintenance Code and the Code of Charlottesville keeps the City clean, keeps down the pest population, and stops problems from flowing over to the surrounding properties. Overall my job helps to ensure that the citizens of Charlottesville maintain their right to safe and healthy living conditions.

 

What is the most interesting project or work experience that you’ve had while with the City? 

On multiple occasions I have worked with the Charlottesville Police Department on cases of fraud: people who prey on the elderly, claiming that they have done repairs to their houses when they have not. Together we have helped over a dozen victims get restitution for the crimes committed against them.

 

What is a little-known fact about you? 

I can wiggle my ears.
