Friday evening, more than 350 guests attended the Albemarle-Charlottesville branch of the NAACP’s 2019 Freedom Fund Banquet at the DoubleTree Hotel Charlottesville. The event is the chapter’s largest fundraiser, according to an event organizer. Dr. Marcus L. Martin, professor emeritus and retired emergency medicine vice president and chief officer for diversity at the University of Virginia, served as the keynote speaker. Part of the banquet’s program also included honoring members of the “Hidden Nurses.” The nurses are graduates of the all-Black Burley High School’s licensed practical nursing program who worked at UVa Medical Center.
