Charlottesville Tomorrow’s education reporter Billy Jean Louis has been selected to be part of the Education Writers Association New to the Beat Program. All participants are paired up with an experienced education journalism mentor for ongoing support and guidance. In addition to the mentorship, participants benefit from specialized programming, webinars, and resources geared to their needs.

Billy attended the first New to the Beat conference in Baltimore on October 27 and 28. The conference included “beat basics” like making the most of open records, how to use federal databases to interpret education research, and how to take your writing and interviewing skills to the next level.

Billy’s mentor is Delece Smith-Barrow, a senior editor for higher education at The Hechinger Report. Prior to joining The Hechinger Report, she was a reporter at U.S. News & World Report, and a producer, writer and editor at The Washington Post.
