Memory Quilt Presentation to City Council
When: Monday, July 6, 7:00pm
Where: City Hall (2nd floor), 605 East Main Street
June 29, 2015 (Charlottesville, VA) – The Memory Quilt made by Clark Elementary third graders and the Crescent Hall Quilters will be presented to City Council at the beginning of the Council meeting on July 6, 2015.
The Memory Quilt project paired third graders from Clark Elementary School with facilitators from the Crescent Hall Quilters, a group of women who live in or near Crescent Halls and are known for their hand-sewn and imaginative quilts. Together, they created a memory quilt that celebrates the cultural heritage of the Belmont and Ridge Street neighborhoods.
In March, third graders met with the quilters during class time to learn about the quilting process and talk about ideas of neighborhood and community. Each student then drew an image to illustrate what their own neighborhood and community meant to them on a block of fabric cloth.
Throughout the month of April, the Crescent Hall Quilters hand embroidered these illustrations and then worked with the students to lay out the overall quilt design. Over the month of May, the Crescent Hall Quilters hand-stitched the quilt blocks together to create the final product.
The final Memory Quilt was revealed in a celebration with the students on May 26. This summer, a publication will be released to document how the Crescent Hall quilters make their work.
The presentation to City Council will be live on Channel 10 and on the web.
