PVCC and CBS19 News will host a 5th District Congressional Debate on Monday, Oct. 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Dickinson Building, Main Stage Theatre, on PVCC’s Main Campus.

The debate will feature candidates Leslie Cockburn (D) and Denver Riggleman (R), vying in November for the seat vacated by Tom Garrett (R), who announced in May that he would not seek reelection. In the first hour of the debate, the candidates will make brief opening statements then answer a series of questions from a panel of educators and journalists. The second hour will feature only questions generated from PVCC students.

The debate will be moderated by CBS19 News Anchor Tyler Hawn. Debate panel members include PVCC President Frank Friedman, a PVCC Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society student representative, CBS19 Reporter Courteney Stuart, Charlottesville Tomorrow Executive Director Giles Morris and WDBJ-TV Reporter Siobhan McGirl.

Pre-allocated tickets for the public were provided through both candidates’ campaigns, and tickets were made available to PVCC students, faculty and staff. The debate will be broadcast live on CBS19 from 7-8 p.m. and livestreamed on the station’s webpage, cbs19news.com. This is the only televised debate of the series of debates between the candidates.

The election will be held Nov. 6, 2018, and the last day to register to vote in this election is October 15, 2018. More information about voter registration can be found at vote.elections.virginia.gov.
