Describe your nonprofit’s mission.
University Montessori School is a diverse family-centered school community which embodies the best practices of Montessori education in facilitating the academic, emotional, physical and social development of each child. In an atmosphere of respect and warmth, parents, teachers and children collaborate to nurture an enduring love of learning and a view of the responsibilities and possibilities of life.
What need in our community brought about the creation of your nonprofit?
UMS was started with a desire to serve the preschool community in Charlottesville/Albemarle using the Montessori curriculum. We serve children ages 3 – 6, and are passionate about helping our students develop a strong sense of themselves, as well as how to be part of a community.
How has your nonprofit made a difference in our community?
We have been working with preschoolers since 1978 and have had our alumni return as parents and teachers. We also have a long-standing relationship with the IRC to ensure that children of all backgrounds are able to access quality Montessori education.
How can community members help you achieve your mission?
As a non-profit preschool with 44 children total, our goal is to provide our services to as diverse a community as possible – racially, socio-economically and religiously. The best way for community members to support us is through tax-deductible donations. These donations go directly to our Financial Aid Fund, a critical component in our drive to serve a broad spectrum of Charlottesville and Albemarle. Donations can be made via our website: universitymontessori.org.
Tell us a story that has come out of your work.
Just one?? One of the stories that sticks out is hearing from an alumni family about their UMS graduate. His first grade teacher fell during the school day, and he was the only child who stepped in to ask if she was OK, and offer assistance. We value the academic skills our students achieve, but this commitment to being part of a community is what really drives us to do what we do.
