University of Virginia classes are canceled Tuesday, while Charlottesville City Schools classes will resume.

Public school and UVA classes were canceled Monday, when a shooting on campus Sunday night sent the UVA campus  into a 12-hour shelter in place order by police while agencies searched for the suspected shooter. Three people were killed, UVA students Lavel Davis Jr., D’Sean Perry and Devan Chandler, and two others were injured and are at UVA Hospital.

The suspected shooter, UVA student Christopher Darnell Jones, Jr., was taken into custody in Henrico County at about 11:30 a.m. on Monday.

“Though we’ll have a normal schedule, we know it will not be a normal day,” Charlottesville Schools Superintendent Royal A. Gurley, Jr. wrote in a message to families “This senseless violence touches us as a school community and as members of the Charlottesville community. This tragedy also follows several other local incidences of gun violence this fall — even earlier this weekend. Each shooting simultaneously breaks our hearts and fills us with fear.”

Mental health professionals will be available to students who would like “to find calm, connection, or a place to take a break.” City Schools also pointed parents to resources for talking with children about difficult news from the American Psychological Association.

Albemarle County Public Schools announced that classes were canceled Monday at 7 a.m. They have not yet announced if school will reopen Tuesday. County officials could not be reached Monday for comment.

“The search for the suspect may be over, but the work of understanding this terrible crime and what motivated him to commit it is just beginning,” UVA President Jim Ryan and Provost Ian Baucom wrote in an email to students, faculty and staff at 3 p.m.

UVA students held an impromptu silent vigil Monday evening. Thousands of students attended on the South Lawn and stood together in silence.
