As of Thursday evening, just 12 people had completed the United Way’s required paperwork to shovel snow for their elderly and disabled neighbors, while 221 households had reached out requesting help.

In order to qualify for assistance from the joint United Way of Greater Charlottesville and City of Charlottesville program, homeowners must be either elderly, have mobility issues or health issues that make shoveling icy snow dangerous or impossible for them.

“The really pressing message is we really need volunteers,” said Kyle Ervin, a spokesperson for the City of Charlottesville. “What we really need to be concerned about is helping each other.”

Charlottesville needs snow removal volunteers

Charlottesville city officials and United Way of Greater Charlottesville are leading a sidewalk-clearing network — and they need more volunteers to help shovel snow.
