The longtime, family-owned grocery store Reid Super-Save Market announced Monday that it will permanently close in “the coming weeks.”

The grocery store at 600 Preston Ave. sold its current property to the nonprofit thrift store Twice is Nice. The organization plans to move in sometime in early 2026, following renovations, the nonprofit said in a joint statement released by the two companies.

“The decision to close and sell was not taken lightly,” Sue Clements, co-owner of Reid’s with her sister Kim Miller, said in the joint statement. “We tried everything, but we just couldn’t make it work. The hardest thing for us is the impact on our employees, who we’ve always thought of as family.”

Reid has struggled in recent years to stay in business. By March 2024, the grocer’s inventory was almost completely gone. The store continued operating only after a local resident started a GoFundMe account to help it stay afloat that raised close to $20,000. Subscribers to the Daily Progress can read more about that effort here.

With the purchase of the building, Twice is Nice said it will close its two existing stores on Preston Avenue and consolidate into the former grocery.

“While we are as sad as anyone to see an iconic local business like Reid’s close its doors, we are excited to carry on the Reid’s tradition of serving the surrounding neighborhoods by providing high quality goods at affordable prices,” Gordon Walker, chairman of the Twice is Nice Board of Directors, said in the statement.
