Remote Area Medical, a nonprofit organization that hosts free pop-up clinics, is looking for volunteers for its March 21–22 clinic in Fishersville, VA.

The clinics typically provide medical care directly to underserved communities and offer a wide range of services, including dental care such as cleanings, fillings, extractions and X-rays; and vision care, including eye exams, prescriptions and glasses made on-site. The clinics also provide women’s health visits and general medical checkups, all at no cost to patients.

There is a high demand for these clinics, and in the past, a RAM spokesperson told Charlottesville Tomorrow that whenever the organization hosts a free clinic, people routinely travel from surrounding communities and sleep in parking lots overnight to claim one of the limited first-come, first-served appointments before they fill up.

RAM is seeking volunteer medical, dental and vision professionals to provide services during clinic hours, as well as general support staff. Additional volunteers are needed to greet patients overnight in the parking area, serve as interpreters and help patients navigate the process either in the parking lot or during clinic hours. No medical field experience is needed for those volunteering as general support staff.

The number of general support volunteers needed depends on the number of healthcare professionals who sign up to see patients.

“By bringing healthcare directly to those in need, RAM removes the barriers of cost and distance that often prevent people from seeking care,” RAM’s Jan. 6 news release said.
